A MUSEUM FOR PRINCES RISBOROUGH

Written by . Posted in Notices

27 High St

Local History Display at the Literary Institute

Thursday 6th July to Saturday 8th July 2017

As part of this year’s Town Festival, and instead of the usual one-day exhibition of social and natural history held in the Community Centre, the Literary Institute will host a three-day exhibition to highlight what has made, and still makes, this area so interesting and rewarding a place in which to live.

The Literary Institute, Risborough Area Heritage Society, Risborough Countryside Group and the Kop Hill Climb will join forces to present the history of the community, its natural surroundings and activities through pictures, documents and objects

This event follows discussions between the Committee of the Institute and a representative group of residents to find a way of giving the Literary Institute a wider part to play in the community, one better able to fulfil the intention of the Rothschild family when in 1891 it presented the building to the town as a social and educational centre on a 1,000-year lease.

Many residents have pointed to the lack of a Museum in the town, such as have been so successful in Thame and Haddenham, and it is hoped that this event will generate both interest and support for such a venture at the Literary Institute, an idea that already has the blessing of Lord Rothschild himself.

This would be a museum to celebrate the heritage of Princes Risborough and its surrounding villages, and indeed a Heritage Centre might be a more appropriate title since we are fortunate in having in Aylesbury one of the best County Museums in the country. It will not be something to happen overnight, but it is something worth working towards that the community deserves.

The exhibition is planned to be open from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. on the Thursday and Friday, and from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Saturday, the main Street Festival Day. We hope to see you there.
